More than 83 percent of elementary school children qualify for free or reduced-priced school meals. So, what do these children do when school is out for holidays or over the weekend? Many of them go hungry until the next school day.
Champion Realty, Inc. has partnered to support Backpack Buddies, a program run throughout the country to help provide ready-to-eat or easy-to-prepare food for children identified by the school to benefit from supplemental food on weekends and school holidays. These children are already on the free or reduced meal program and the interaction with the children is only done by the school.
Grocery bags filled with nutritional, easy-to-prepare or ready-to-eat foods are delivered to the school each week. The school places these bags into the backpacks and the children take them home on Friday afternoons, returning them to the school on Mondays.
Currently, more than 200 children in the area benefit from the weekend meals. Food for backpacks is in need.
