What better way to start the New Year then with a clean slate and a cleared home! Clearing a home is about ridding the home of clutter and stagnant energy. Homes are much like our bodies. They can accumulate a lot of stuff that clutters up space and blocks positive energy flow and wellness. The start of the New Year is the ideal time to purge your home of broken items, things you haven’t used, don’t want, outgrew their usefulness, don’t represent your life now, and general negative energies. The moon is still waning towards a new moon on Tuesday. This makes for a perfect time to start a purge, make room for new abundance in 2011 and create a positive impact on both your physical space and emotional well-being.
When living spaces are lightened up, you’ll actually feel lighter too. Take a look at your living areas with a fresh eye. Anything that doesn’t serve its purpose perfectly should be eliminated. Remember that this is a two-fold process. First, you want to clear out items that are no longer needed but taking up space and weighing down the energy flow in your home. And two, you want to create a comfortable space that is entirely yours, reflective of your personality and life.
Make it fun and purposeful. Get the whole family involved in the process. The children can go through their toys, clothing and papers to separate what is unworn or unused, what can be given away, and discard those items that are beyond repair. After the clutter has been cleared, inspect the floors, ceilings, walls, doors, closets and windows for needed cleaning, repairs; tighten handles, oil hinges and sliders, seal cracks and holes.
Old papers, bills and magazines that have been piling up can be eliminated. Important documents can be sorted, digitally scanned and saved onto a removable storage device for future reference. Those items to be filed should be filed in an orderly way in appropriate storage. Then be sure to shred and discard or recycle the rest. Gently used books and magazines can be donated to your local library, donation or collection center to be put to good use for someone else.
Garages, basements and attics are areas where “get-to-later” projects and items are relegated and usually forgotten. This stockpile of stuff can create areas where energy can get stuck and drag down the home’s energetic patterns and your own. Schedule some time to sort through an area to organize and declutter. Check with your city for disposal procedures of chemicals, paints, and toxic substances. Then, inspect and repair these areas for leaks, cracks, and loose insulation.
Changes made in your bedroom can actually result in better, more restful sleep and deeper relationships. If you must have a television in your bedroom, covering it or enclosing it will help block the disturbing electronic vibrations that it emits, even when turned off. Ditto for computers and other electronic devices. Clearing surfaces, shelves, drawers, closets and under the bed of excess clutter, papers, clothes and knick-knacks opens and lightens your sanctuary. Distractions merely clog. Again, you want your bedroom to serve as a place to unwind and relax to promote a restorative effect and still embody your unique personality.
Once you’ve detoxed your home of stuff, be sure to clean it starting from the outer corners, in. This helps dislodge stagnant energy held in the home from the cracks and corners–similar to what exercise does for the sluggish body system: gets things moving! Open all of your windows to allow fresh air flow for a few moments. This symbolizes letting out the old, stagnant energy and welcomes in the new energy. Then walk through each room of your home. Your home will feel energetically changed, as will you. This shift will create a flow of positive potential into your life and home. Welcome this. And welcome your new year, 2011.
