Maryland Suspends 6% Sales Tax

School will be starting for many students in the next few weeks around Maryland. Just in time for parents having to shell out the bucks for necessary clothing and shoes, Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot announced Maryland's State Sales Tax Holiday from Sunday, August 8th to Saturday August 14th. The 6 percent sales tax usually charged on clothing and shoes under $100 will be suspended during this "holiday." Items such as work safety equipment or sports clothes not normally worn on the street are not exempt.

The last time Maryland offered this tax holiday was in 2001. During that time, purchases on tax free items increased 10 percent. The Comptroller is hoping that Maryland shoppers will come out and purchase during the tax holiday despite the recent slow sales in retail markets.

Now, if they will expand the tax holiday to include sports clothing and school supplies!
