Homeowners Warned to Be Cautious: Thieves Using Fake Badges Attempt to Gain Entry to Homes

Recently, Anne Arundel County Police have alerted us to individuals using fictitious identities posing as a county, service or utility worker targeting homes throughout the county as a decoy.

The suspect, described as an Hispanic male, attempts to lure the occupant outside using an excuse related to his fictitious identity. While outside, an accomplice surreptitiously enters the home to steal valuables before the occupant returns. In one case, the suspect lured the occupant into the basement to look at the washer while communicating with the accomplice on a two-way radio. The occupant learned after the suspect left that he'd been robbed. That occupant was fortunate that it didn't escalate to a more serious crime.

For unscheduled service calls, do not allow the individual into the home, accompany the individual anywhere or step outside leaving the house unlocked even if the individual shows a badge. Verify the presented credentials with the actual agency from inside the safety of your home with all doors locked.

If you suspect the individual is an impostor, telephone your local police authority immediately. Do not try to detain the individual but be observant of all details that would be helpful for the police.
